Nuffield College and the Rothermere American Institute (RAI) intend to appoint jointly, for three years with effect from 1 September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter, a Rivington and Joan Winant Postdoctoral Research Fellow in US Foreign Policy. The research area of the post is twentieth-century and/or contemporary US foreign policy from a historical (since 1898), political science, or international relations perspective (the three approaches not being mutually exclusive).
The key responsibilities of the Research Fellow are to engage in advanced study and independent scholarly research in twentieth-century and/or contemporary US foreign policy; to disseminate research findings through publication and participation in conferences and workshops; to take part in the intellectual life of the College and the RAI by organising workshops, seminars or conferences, and to undertake, where appropriate, a small amount of teaching and examining.
To be eligible, candidates should hold a bachelors and/or masters degree in a relevant field and should by 1 September 2016 have completed, or be close to completing, a doctorate that focuses on some aspect of US foreign policy, whether from a historical (since 1898), political science, or international relations perspective. Candidates must be within three years of the award of their doctorate at the time of application. Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously held a research fellowship similar to that advertised for more than one year at the time of taking up the fellowship. Allowances will be made for career breaks (for example, family-related leave) and candidates are asked to provide relevant justification. Prospective candidates should also have: a research proposal that falls within the area of the post; experience of carrying out independent research; and a track record of excellent quality papers appropriate for and commensurate with their career level. They should have the ability to provide excellent teaching to high-achieving students; the willingness to contribute to the intellectual life of the College and the Institute; and excellent oral and written communication skills.
The post is fixed-term for three years, starting on 1 September 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary offered is £29,815 per annum. Research Fellows are entitled to single accommodation in College (at a subsidised rate). Further benefits include a research allowance, free lunch and dinner in College and child support funds.
