The Sussex Centre for American Studies invites you to a public lecture on the fiftieth anniversary of the Voting Rights Act by Professor Bill Chafe. Chafe will be a scholar-in-residence at Sussex from 25 to 27 February.

Chafe is the Alice Mary Baldwin Professor of History emeritus at Duke University and an eminent historian of modern America. Much of his scholarship reflects his long-term interests in racial and gender equality. He is the author of twelve books, including Civilities and Civil Rights, which won the inaugural Robert F. Kennedy Book Award; Remembering Jim Crow; The Unfinished Journey; The Paradox of Change: American Women in the 20th Century; and Bill and Hillary: The Politics of the Personal.             ‘Voting rights after fifty years: the more things change, the more they remain the same’

In this lecture, Chafe will reflect on the fiftieth anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a landmark achievement of the civil rights movement, and he will examine recent attempts by American conservatives to undo this legislation.
