Postdoctoral Fellow – Mellon-Sawyer Seminar Series 2017-18: Post-War: Commemoration, Reconstruction, Reconciliation

Faculty of English Language and Literature, St Cross Building, Manor Road, Oxford and The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH), Radcliffe Humanities, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford
Grade 7: £31,076 – £38,183 p.a.

This post arises from a grant awarded by the Andrew W Mellon Foundation for a Mellon-Sawyer Seminar Series to be held in Oxford in the academic year 2017-18. The Series is entitled Post-War: Commemoration, Reconstruction, Reconciliation and will bring together academics, creative practitioners and policy experts in a series of events to discuss the contribution of cultural practices of commemoration to post-war reconstruction and reconciliation across the world. Three modes of commemoration will be highlighted in turn: textual (term 1); monumental (term 2); and aural (term 3).

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be attached to the project full-time for 12 months commencing on 1 July 2017 and will be expected to carry out independent research on a topic related to the theme of commemoration and develop this into a research article, monograph or other significant publication under the mentorship of Professor Kate McLoughlin at the University of Oxford and Dr Niall Munro at Oxford Brookes University. The postholder will also be expected to make a major contribution to the intellectual content of the series (including by researching, developing and briefing on the content of the events) and to undertake some administrative tasks in relation to it (including assisting with event organisation and development and publicity).

Applicants should possess a doctorate in a relevant discipline (which must have been awarded by the time the individual takes up the post), and should have an established or developing track record of research, together with experience of event organisation (preferably academic event organisation); excellent communication and presentation skills, both oral and written; excellent computer skills including Word, Excel and digital media; excellent time management and organisational skills; the ability to work with budgets and to collate large amounts of information; and the ability to work independently and to work effectively as part of a research team, to manage their own academic research and related activities, and to take a professional and flexible approach to work.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be based at the Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) and will also be a non-stipendiary Junior Research Fellow of Harris Manchester College, Oxford.

Applications (which should include a CV, a supporting statement and a maximum two-page proposal outlining a potential research project linked to the theme of commemoration) should be made online. Two references will be sought for shortlisted candidates.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Friday 17 February 2017. Interviews will be held in Oxford in early March 2017.
