Better Together? Union & Disunion in the Early Modern Atlantic

The British Group of Early American Historians Conference 2014, University of Edinburgh

The British Group of Early American Historians will hold its 2014 conference at the University of Edinburgh between 4th and 7th September. During the same month Scotland will be holding a Referendum on Independence from the United Kingdom and, with this turning point in mind, the broad theme of the conference will be ‘Better together? Union and Disunion in the early modern Atlantic’. In shaping the modern Atlantic world, multiple enduring, and less enduring, alliances have been forged between nations, families, and individuals and many have fallen apart. The causes and consequences of these realignments provide rich material for papers and panels. However, the Programme Committee welcomes complete panel and individual proposals on any aspect of early American history before 1820. Our keynote speakers include Professor Tom Devine, University of Edinburgh, and Professor Philip Morgan, Johns Hopkins University.

Please email proposals to Nuala Zahedieh at n.zahedieh@ed.ac.uk. Proposals should be sent as an attachment and individual submissions should include a one page summary of the paper and a brief c.v.  Panel submissions should include a one paragraph overview of the intended session in addition to the individual paper descriptions and a c.v. for each participant. The deadline for submissions is 14th March 2014.
