Moving Pictures and Photoplays: New Perspectives in Silent Cinema is a two-day postgraduate conference, to be held on 18th and 19th June 2015 at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television, University of York. The organisers welcome proposals from postgraduate and early career researchers on any aspect relating to silent cinema and film industry of the silent period. Possible topics can include, but are by no means limited to the following themes and subject areas:
• National Cinemas
• Hollywood Silent Period
• Early Cinema and Cinema of Attractions
• Technologies of Silent Film: Sound and Vision
• Star Studies
• The Sound of Silents: Sound Effects, Foley or Music
• Practices of Film Exhibition
• Representations of Gender and/or Race
• Fan Culture and Film Magazine
• Aesthetics
The confirmed keynote speakers are:
Dr Jennifer M. Bean (Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Cinema Studies,
Adjunct Associate Professor of the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies,
University of Washington)
Dr Stefania Serafin (Professor in Sound for Multimodal Environments, Medialogy Aalborg
University, Copenhagen)
Please submit a 300 word abstract of your presentation to
silentcinemaconference@gmail.com by 27th of March 2015, with 5 keywords and a short bio to best describe you and your research area. You will be contacted by 17th April 2015 with the organiser’s decision.
Attendance is free, but places are limited. Small travel reimbursements up to a maximum of £50 will be available. If you wish to be considered for one, please write ‘Travel Allowance’ in the top left corner of your abstract and include the name of the place you will be traveling from. The reimbursements will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
