Friday 13th – Saturday 14th May 2022
King’s College London and online
The British Association of Nineteenth-Century Americanists is pleased to announce dates for its much-delayed biennial symposium on Friday May 13th and Saturday May 14th 2022, 1pm-6.30pm.This will be a hybrid event held online and at King’s College London to allow participation for those who may not wish to travel. By starting at 1pm London time we hope to allow for virtual attendance from colleagues around the world. It will cost £20 for full time faculty and is free for all others. In addition, some travel grants might be available for postgraduate students. For those who wish to attend in-person there will be a full Covid risk assessment in advance.
Our preference is for fully formed panels to be submitted, but if you are struggling to find interlocutors then get in touch with branca1865@gmail.com and we will help you find someone (you might also consult the list here: http://www.branca.org.uk/members.html) Panels should last 90 minutes but you are free to play fast and loose with the panel format, if you wish to.
The more conventional conference element of the symposium will take place on the Saturday afternoon. On Friday afternoon we will be hosting a reading group and a workshop. These reading groups were previously a staple of BrANCA but have, of course, been hard to run recently. During these we discuss, close read, and theorise about a single text that seems particularly significant for whoever leads the session. If you would like to lead the reading group, then please get in touch with suggestions for your text and what you would like to do with it.
The deadline for submissions is April 1. Please send no more than 200 words about your panel, and no more than 200 words about each paper, along with names and contact details of panellists to Ed Sugden (edward.sugden@kcl.ac.uk) who will distribute them to the rest of the steering committee. Any questions please do get in touch.
