Being Human: a festival of the humanities

Call for participation

15–23 November 2014

The School of Advanced Study, in partnership with the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC)  and the British Academy, is delighted to announce and invite participation in Being Human—the UK’s first national festival of the humanities.

Being Human aims to engage the public with the very best of the innovative research taking place across the humanities. Hosted by HE institutions and their cultural and community partners across the UK, it will draw together a programme of activities to inform, extend, and ignite our contemporary thinking and imagination.

In this inaugural year, the School is extending an open call for applications for small grants of £2-3k to facilitate participation in the festival. These grants will support activities that make humanities research accessible to the general public and demonstrate the role the humanities can play in the cultural, intellectual, political and social life of the UK.

The question of what it means to be human is at the heart of humanities research, and for this festival will provide a locus around which to demonstrate the vitality and public relevance of the humanities in 2014. Following the success of the Being/Human theme used for the 2013 Arts and Humanities Festival at King’s College London, this festival will inspire engagement with humanities research on a national scale.

Apply for event funding

The School of Advanced Study, University of London, together with the AHRC and the British Academy, has made available a number of funding grants of between £2-3k for events to be staged during the Festival week.

Applications are invited from universities and independent research organisations to bid for support to stage events.
