Associate Professor in American History (St Peter’s College, University of Oxford)

Applications are invited for a permanent full-time Associate Professorship in the field of Modern United States History. The post is tenable from 1 October 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter and will be offered in conjunction with an Official Fellowship in History at St Peter’s College. It will be based mainly at St Peter’s College with some responsibilities carried out at the History Faculty.

The main duties of the role will be to engage in scholarly research and publication in the history of the United States of America in the period 1783-1914; to take responsibility for the organization, supervision and teaching of History at St Peter’s College including arrangements for the admission of new students and the pastoral care of students reading History and its Joint Schools; to give lectures and supervise graduate students on behalf of the History Faculty; to take part in University examining; to act as College Advisor to St Peter’s College graduate students in History and cognate areas; and to participate in the administration of the College and the Faculty. The appointee will be an Official Fellow of St Peter’s College.

Applicants should have a doctorate in History and a research record and/or research potential, with a level of publication appropriate to the stage of the candidate’s career, at a standard which will contribute to and enhance the national and international profile of the Faculty of History and St Peter’s College, in aspects of 19th century United States history. The appointee will be expected to demonstrate evidence of excellence, or the potential for excellence, in teaching History, particularly to undergraduates, and the ability to lecture at an appropriate level to undergraduate audiences and to conduct graduate classes.

Salary on a combined College and University scale within the range £44,620 – £59,914 p.a., plus £7,467 p.a. taxable and pensionable College housing allowance and other benefits.
