CFP: The Historical “Dispute of the New World”: European Historians of the United States and European History, Culture and Public Life (Torino, Italy)

May 31, 2015

TORINO (ITALY), SEPTEMBER 10-11, 2015
CISPEA, the consortium of United States and European-American historians from the Universities of Bologna, Florence, Eastern Piedmont, Rome, and Triest, is pleased to invite you to the international workshop: “The Historical Dispute of the New World” European Historians of the United States and European History, Culture and Public Life,” which is taking place in Torino, Italy, on September 10-11, 2015. Organizers subsidize on a competitive basis the room and board expenses of 15 participants, as indicated below.
At the foundation of this scholarly gathering is the opinion that European Americanist historians, while writing on the American past, have still been often inspired by personal, cultural, public values, issues and concerns stemming from their national European locations. Most European Americanist historians have as a consequence not “gone American,” but have remained culturally and ideally French, Russian, British, (and Europeans, in spite of the admitted fuzziness of this belonging). Setting itself in the path opened by the recent book Historians Across Borders. Writing American History in a Global Age, edited in 2014 by Nicolas Barreyre, Michael Heale, Stephen Tuck and Cécile Vidal, and the “You the People” roundtable in the June 2014 issue of the American Historical Review, the two-day workshop in Torino will aim, on the one hand, to try and root national/regional US history schools in each country’s public, cultural and history-writing traditions, on the other hand to draw from the different case studies larger interpretative similarities and cleavages to be referred if not to the whole of Europe at least to large sections of it.
The workshop will take place in English, and will feature 30-mins presentations in a seminar format, with plenty of time scheduled for discussion between speakers, participants and the public. Confirmed speakers are, amongst others: Stephen Tuck (Oxford University), Philipp Gassert (University of Manheim), Michael Heale (Lancaster University), Paul Schor (Université Paris VII Denis Diderot), Nando Fasce (Universitá di Genova).
PARTICIPANT COMPETITION
The organizers will take financial responsibility for the room and board expenses of 15 participants (travel expenses are to be borne by the participant and/or his/her institution) during the days of the workshop. Subsidized participations are assigned on a competitive basis. The competition is open to every institutional affiliation, every age and every country. PhD candidates (or candidates to corresponding European degrees) are welcome to apply. The workshop deals with how American history has been written in Europe and in European countries, this invitation is not addressed to Americanists only, but Europeanists and historians of the different European countries are equally invited to apply.

Each applicant must send to maurizio.vaudagna@lett.unipmn.it a CV in English of no less than 1 double-space page with a short email that explains his/her interest in the event. Participants are encouraged to attend the whole workshop, but in any case no less than 3 out of 4 sessions. Applications are to be received from now on and in any case no later than May 31, 2015, and applicants will receive the organizers’ answer by June 10. The selection will be conducted following criteria of geographic, age, and institutional affiliation balance and coherence of the applicant’s scholarly interests with the theme of the workshop. In cases where these criteria were even, then the principle of “first come, first serve” will prevail. Participants are not asked for written papers or statements, but are expected to participate and enliven the discussion. Their names and institutional affiliations will appear in the official workshop program under the entry “Participants”. Non-subsidized participants are equally welcome at their own expense and their names will equally appear in the program. No fee is necessary to participate. To express your interest to participate in the event and receive details on the program, please write to maurizio.vaudagna@lett.unipmn.it.
