Funded by the AHRC and led by Durham University’s Centre for Medical Humanities in collaboration with the Northern Network for Medical Humanities Research and the Wellcome Trust, this programme is a fully funded opportunity for early career researchers and postgraduates to engage with Interdisciplinary skills development for medical humanities over the academic year 2014-15. This is the first programme of its kind to focus on developing the next generation of medical humanities scholars.  The programme will provide training, experience in interdisciplinary work and opportunities to visit and interact with staff and academics in key centres for the medical humanities in the UK at a range of Universities and organisations.  

The Programme

New Generations is led by Durham University’s CMH in collaboration with Northern Network for Medical Humanities Research, the Centre for Humanities and Health at Kings College, London and the Wellcome Trust.  You will participate in series of workshops held in Durham, Leeds, Glasgow and London that will introduce you to the world leaders in medical humanities research, to key players in research funding, and to those who are responsible for curating and presenting research resources.

The workshops will cover the following topics:

•  Introducing Interdisciplinary Research Methods in the Medical Humanities
• Narrative Medicine and the Medical
• Funding, Publishing and Careers
• The Changing Landscape of Research Resources
• Public Engagement: Simulation and Innovation
• Digital Developments
• The Material Culture of Medicine
• Media, Evaluation, and Sustainability

The subject of one further workshop has been left open to participant choice.

At each event there will be a session where you and your fellow participants will have the opportunity to create your own interdisciplinary research group, supported by an expert facilitator.

How are you funded?

Your participation in the programme will be fully funded by the scheme, including all travel, accommodation and subsistence.

What will New Generations do for you?

• You will be part of an interdisciplinary group of developing scholars with a range of interests and skills;
• You will work with the top medical humanities scholars in the UK at a range of venues across the country and have the chance to discuss your current research and career plans;
• You will learn new interdisciplinary skills and have the opportunity to practice them;
• You will develop expertise in grant writing and public engagement;

• You will find out about alternative career options for academics in research resources such as libraries and museums.

What will you bring to the programme?

• You should be a 2^nd or 3^rd year PhD student from the humanities, social sciences or sciences (including clinical sciences), or an early career researcher who has obtained their PhD no more than 5 years from the application deadline;
• You will be able to demonstrate a commitment to collaborative approaches to research, especially with other disciplines;
• You should be able to articulate how your research relates to medical humanities;
• You will commit to attending the entire programme and have institutional support from your University or employer for doing so;
• You will contribute to the future development of the programme and the field by recording impressions on the CMH blog and by publicising the programme at your own institution.

• A letter of support from your supervisor or Head of Department answers (no more than 1000 words) to the following questions:

1. How does your research and research interests relate to medical humanities?
2. How will the New Generations programme benefit you in your research and future career intentions?
3. What will you bring to the programme?

A selection panel comprising the Steering Group for the programme will draw up a shortlist.  Participants will be chosen on the basis of career promise, demonstrable commitment to collaborative working, and relationship of their work to medical humanities, and disciplinary and career stage mix.

The organisers welcome any questions regarding the post and anticipate participating in an ongoing open dialogue regarding the overall programme. They expect that competition for the ten places on New Generations will be strong and that they will be contacting a shortlist by phone for short telephone interviews, a SKYPE interview may also be arranged.
