BrANCH Annual Conference 2022

October 7, 2022 @ 8:00 am - October 9, 2022 @ 5:00 pm

The BrANCH committee is pleased to invite paper and panel proposals for our 29th annual conference, to be held at College Court, University of Leicester, 7-9 October 2022.

The following Call for Papers for BrANCH 2022 at College Court is issued in the expectation that the Covid-19 rules will be sufficiently relaxed, and the various vaccinations sufficiently effective, that the conference can be held in person in October.  The committee will be keeping a close eye on the situation.

We are delighted to announce that the Parish Lecturer for 2022 will be Professor Susan-Mary Grant of the University of Newcastle.  Until recently the Chair of BrANCH, Professor Grant has made a major contribution to the study of nineteenth-century American history in the United Kingdom.  She is the author of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.: Civil War Soldier, Supreme Court Justice; The War for a Nation: The American Civil War; and North Over South: Northern Nationalism and American Identity in the Antebellum Era, as well as numerous articles.

The BrANCH Keynote Lecturer for 2022 will be Professor Deirdre Cooper Owens, the Charles and Linda Wilson Professor in the History of Medicine at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Her first book, Medical Bondage: Race, Gender and the Origins of American Gynecology won the 2018 Darlene Clark Hine Book Award from the OAH as the best book written in African American women’s and gender history.  She has published many articles, chapters and blogs on the African American experience.  Her current work focuses on mental illness during the period of American slavery.

The BrANCH Committee would like to invite proposals for both panels and individual papers on all aspects of U.S. history in the period from 1789 to 1917. We particularly encourage panels that open new lines of communication between established thematic specialties, as well as individual papers that cut across traditional categories of historical inquiry in imaginative and innovative ways. Sponsored panels and postgraduate contributions are especially welcome.

In line with BrANCH’s diversity initiative, proposals for single-gender panels are unlikely to be accepted.

Subsidies for UK-based postgraduate participants are available for those not in receipt of support from their home institutions. These will be offered on a first come first served basis.

We are pleased to introduce a childcare/carers’ bursary for postgraduates and ECRs with caring responsibilities.  Please get in touch with the conference organisers using the email address, below, if you would like to receive such a bursary.

Please send a brief CV and a summary of the proposed paper or panel (no more than 3 speakers per panel and 300 words per paper, please) by Friday 6th May 2022 to the Conference Secretary at: branchconf2021@gmail.com

Please note that all programme participants will be expected either to be members or register as BrANCH members before the conference.

Further information on membership can be found here, and please see our Twitter feed for regular updates, or you can email the Chair, Professor Emily West, e.r.west@reading.ac.uk, or the Conference Secretary, Dr Elizabeth Clapp, ejc12@leicester.ac.uk.
