May #Bookhour: The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

On 30th May, Dr Rachel Sykes, Michael Docherty, and Dr Chris Lloyd joined Dr Diletta De Cristofaro to lead the May #bookhour on Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad. The #bookhour opened by thinking about issues of historical memory, especially in relation to the novel's device of making the railroad a literal one, and the texts's relationship with other cultural representations of slavery. The discussion then moved to consider the troubled boundary between history and fiction in The Underground Railroad, the text's generic hybridity, its narrative tone, and its representation of trauma, violence, and the body.
