The Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen invites applications for the position of Full Professor of American Studies: Political Culture and Political Theory to strengthen the growing department.
Job description
The position involves:

  • teaching – primarily – American Political Culture and Political Theory for the American Studies bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes, and possibly for other relevant bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes
  • coordinating and conducting research in the field of American Political Culture and Political Theory
  • raising external funds for research
  • supervising PhD students
  • performing administrative and organizational duties
  • further cultivating and developing national and international contacts to benefit teaching and research.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will be an internationally recognized expert in the field of American Political Culture and Political Theory and will have an outstanding knowledge of current national and international debates on and research in the field. The chosen candidate is expected to encourage and stimulate the members of his/her department.
Those with training in two or more of the following fields and an interdisciplinary focus are encouraged to apply: American studies, Ethnic studies, Anthropology, Literature, History, Religious studies, Gender studies, Political science, Sociology and other related fields.
Interested parties:

  • have a PhD in American Political Culture or Political Theory
  • have a demonstrable interest in 20th and 21st century developments in the United States and its transnational relations in particular in an Inter-American context (‘The Americas’)
  • have demonstrated excellent teaching skills and have the ability to innovate
  • have conducted extensive research in the field of American Political Culture and Political Theory and use an interdisciplinary approach in their research
  • have a wide-ranging and relevant academic network
  • have good managerial, administrative and organizational skills
  • have been successful at raising external funds for research
  • have experience in supervising PhD students
  • are able to promote interest in the field
  • have an excellent command of English (C1 level); a good knowledge of Spanish is also an asset
  • have a good knowledge of Dutch, or is willing to learn this language to B2 level of the CEFR in order to function effectively within the Faculty
  • are willing to take up residence in or near the city of Groningen.

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen is offering a position as professor (professor 2), beginning as soon as possible, preferably 1 September 2017. The salary is based on qualifications and experience and is between € 5,260 and € 7,659 gross per month (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) for a fulltime position, with an additional 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
A research presentation or lecture and an assessment may form part of the next stage of the selection procedure.
