Joshua Johnson’s Portrait of a Gentleman is one of the American Museum’s most evocative paintings. Starting with this image, Professor Celeste Marie Bernier traces the history of African American portraiture from its birth in the eighteenth century among the black artists who strove to create art against the odds.
Celeste Marie Bernier is a Professor of African American Studies at Nottingham University and is currently a Fellow at the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Yale University.
