Postdoctoral RAI Visiting Research Fellowship (PVRFs) (Rothermere American Institute)

March 30, 2015

The RAI invites applications for Postdoctoral and Senior Visiting Research Fellowships for 2015-16.

The closing date is 30th March 2015 at noon.

Postdoctoral RAI Visiting Research Fellowship (PVRFs)
Rothermere American Institute Visiting Fellows pursue research on diverse aspects of American history, politics and culture in the Institute’s Vere Harmsworth Library, which holds outstanding collections of American materials, and elsewhere at Oxford University. Fellows use their time at the Institute to write books and articles, and engage in the Institute’s lively community of scholars.

Postdoctoral Visiting Research Fellowships (PVRFs) are directed at academics that have recently completed a doctorate, or are at an early stage of their academic career. They are tenable for one or two terms with the proviso that there are no more than two PVRFs in residence at any one time. PVRFs are expected to spend at least three working days each week at the RAI during their Fellowship and to give an academic paper.

Each PVRF is provided with a fully equipped and modern office with views of the RAI garden. All RAI fellows have full access to the Vere Harmsworth Library – home to the finest academic collections in American history, politics and government outside North America – and to other libraries within the Bodleian Library system. The RAI is unable to offer stipends, but provides each PVRF with a £200 travel grant each term for research.

HOW TO APPLY:
An application should consist of the applicant’s name; postal and email address; current academic affiliation and status; citizenship status; details of the financial support upon which the applicant will rely during his or her stay (including any research grants applied for) and a curriculum vitae of not more than three pages. It should specify that the application is for a Postdoctoral Visiting Research Fellowship (to distinguish from other fellowships offered by the RAI).

In a covering letter, the applicant should set out the title of the project to be undertaken at the RAI and a short account (in not more than 500 words) of the project, its research question, and its intellectual significance. Applicants should also provide two academic references.

Please send materials in support of your application either by post to the Fellowships Committee, Rothermere American Institute, 1a South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3UB, or by email to enquiries@rai.ox.ac.uk.

Senior RAI Visiting Research Fellowship (SVRF)
Rothermere American Institute Visiting Fellows pursue research on diverse aspects of American history, politics and culture in the Institute’s Vere Harmsworth Library, which holds outstanding collections of American materials, and elsewhere at Oxford University. Fellows use their time at the Institute to write books and articles, and engage in the Institute’s lively community of scholars.

The Senior Visiting Research Fellowship (SVRF) provides for a single Fellowship designed for academics in mid-to-late career. The Fellowship is tenable for a full academic year, and is not renewable. The SVRF is expected to spend at least three working days each week at the RAI during the Fellowship and to give an academic paper.

The SVRF is provided with a fully equipped and modern office with views of the RAI garden. All RAI fellows have full access to the Vere Harmsworth Library – home to the finest academic collections in American history, politics and government outside North America – and to other libraries within the Bodleian Library system. The RAI is unable to offer stipends, but provides the SVRF with a £200 travel grant each term for research.

The person elected to an SVRF normally has the opportunity to become a member of the Senior Common Room of one of Oxford’s colleges, facilitating contacts with scholars from across the University. The RAI pays up to £80 a month towards a Senior Fellow’s college dining costs.
