Canada, NAFTA, CETA and TPP (UCL, Institute of the Americas)

Professor Earl H. Fry (Brigham Young) – The seminar will look at Canada’s Political Economy within a North American and North Atlantic Framework and will cover a number of issues including recent major political and economic developments in Canada; foreign policy issues; Canada’s complex relations with the United States; Canada and NAFTA; Canada and the EU: CETA, the TPP, and indirectly the TTIP; Canadian federalism and the ‘international relations’ of provincial governments: Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia; major challenges and opportunities facing Canada in the political and economic domains; is it possible to implement a NAFTA-EU free-trade agreement?

Earl H. Fry is Professor of Political Science and Endowed Professor of Canadian Studies at Brigham Young University. He is a former President of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) and former Special Assistant in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), part of the Executive Office of the President of the United States.

While at USTR, he took part in negotiations which would eventually result in the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. He has written extensively on Canada-U.S. and Mexico-U.S. economic relations and has recently made numerous presentations in EU countries on the costs and benefits of the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Lexington Books has just published his volume Revitalizing Governance, Restoring Prosperity, and Restructuring Foreign Affairs: The Pathway to Renaissance America.


Attendance is free of charge but registration is required. Refreshments will be available fro 17:30 for a presentation to start at 18:00. IMPORTANT NOTE ON ACCESS TO 51 GORDON SQUARE: in order to ensure a smooth delivery of the lecture and for ease of logistics, access to the building may be restricted after the start of the event. We will endeavour to accommodate late arrivals within our possibilities, but an early arrival is recommended to avoid disappointment.
