‘What is & How to Do LGBT History?’ Conference (Manchester)

February 26, 2016 @ 8:00 am - February 28, 2016 @ 5:00 pm

The third ‘What is & How to Do LGBT History: Methods, Subjects and Approaches’ conference is part of the second National Festival of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Trans* History that will run throughout the month of February, which has been designated since 2005 as LGBT History Month (UK).

Despite many advances in our understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and intersex (LGBTI) histories, the study of past attitudes towards sex and gender diversity remains an underdeveloped field. This conference seeks to place experiences and identities in their historical context and thereby uncover and understand regional, temporal and ideological differences in past attitudes towards gender and sex.

Further details of the Second National Festival of LGBT History including this conference will be posted on the LGBT History Month website as they are confirmed.
The Distinguished Academic Patrons of LGBT History Month: Professor Alison Oram (Leeds Beckett University), Professor Harry Cocks (University of Nottingham), Professor Matt Cook (Birkbeck, University of London), Professor Sheila Rowbotham (University of Manchester), Professor Charles Upchurch (Florida State University), Professor Jeffrey Weeks (London South Bank University), Professor Stephen Whittle (Manchester Metropolitan University).

The Conference is a Schools OUT/LGBT History Month event coordinated by the Academic Advisory Panel (History). Membership of the Academic Advisory Panel (History): Craig Griffiths (Queen Mary, University of London), Emma Vickers (Liverpool John Moores University), Helen Smith (University of Lincoln), Jeff Evans (Manchester Metropolitan University), Justin Bengry (Birkbeck, University of London) and Mark Walmsley (University of Leeds). All Distinguished Academic Patrons are ex officio members.
