The Annual Eleanor Roosevelt Lecture: Sir Keir Starmer MP, on Human Rights

Start: Feb 09, 2017 06:00 PM

Location: UCL Main Quad Pavillion, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT

The UCL Institute of the Americas is pleased to announce that its 2017 annual Eleanor Roosevelt lecture will be delivered by Sir Keir Starmer MP. Keir Starmer’s maiden parliamentary speech after his election in 2015 referenced Eleanor Roosevelt’s inspiration to modern advocates of human rights. This was in recognition of her role as chair and driving force of the United Nations Human Rights Commission that created the 1948 charter of liberties, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Keir Starmer will discuss the development of human rights under this charter and comment on the significance of Eleanor Roosevelt’s legacy.

Sir Keir Starmer, KCB, QC, has served since 2015 as Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras and is presently a member of Labour front-bench team as spokesperson on Brexit. He has been a barrister since 1987, acting principally as a defence lawyer specializing in human rights issues. He served as Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013. He is the author and editor of several books about criminal law and human rights.

Attendance to this event is free of charge but registration is essential.
