Lecturer in American History Post 1880 (University of Sheffield)

The Department of History at the University of Sheffield is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in American History Since c. 1800. They are interested in applications from historians of North, Central, South, and/or Caribbean America.

This is an exciting time to join the Department. The University of Sheffield also has a vibrant postgraduate research culture, and their expertise in applying digital technology to historical research informs scholarship and teaching at every level. They teach the history of all periods from antiquity to the present day, taking in Europe, South Asia, and the Americas, and attract highly qualified undergraduate and MA students. The Department of History was rated highest in the 2015 National Student Survey among Russell Group History departments.

This is an ideal opportunity for a scholar with an outstanding publication record and excellent teaching ability to join one of the leading centres for historical research in the United Kingdom. You will have teaching and research strengths within the history of the Americas and be a potential leader both in your subject and in the Department as a whole. You will help design and deliver teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and will develop the Department’s research profile with high-quality publications and by attracting external research funding.

You will be expected to be a collaborative and dynamic member of the Department’s research community and develop connections and synergies both with their American historians and other research groupings and centres. You will also be expected to contribute to the Department’s presence within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the wider University and, through outreach and knowledge exchange, in Sheffield and beyond to develop and contribute to civic experience and cultural engagement in the City.

You will have a PhD in History or a related subject area (or have equivalent experience), proven teaching and leadership ability and the capacity to carry out high-quality research and to disseminate research findings effectively. The willingness to communicate to a variety of audiences beyond the purely academic is also essential for this position.
