HOTCUS Doctoral and Early Career Travel Awards

HOTCUS welcomes applications from doctoral students and early career researchers for its two 2015 Travel Award competitions:

1) HOTCUS Doctoral Travel Award 2015

HOTCUS Doctoral Travel Awards support research in any area of twentieth century United States history. Applications may be made for up to £750 for research travel during 2015. There are no residency restrictions and travel may be to, or within, any country. Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral programme (full or part-time) at the time of application. Applicants must be HOTCUS members at the time of application.

2) HOTCUS Early Career Travel Award 2015

HOTCUS Early Career Travel Awards support research in any area of twentieth century United States history. Applications may be made for up to £750 for research travel during 2014. There are no residency restrictions and travel may be to, or within, any country. Applicants must hold a PhD and be on a sessional, part-time or temporary one-year full-time contract at the time of application. Applicants must be HOTCUS members at the time of application.

Application Instructions:

Applicants for both competitions should provide a statement explaining the project, the nature of the research and the archive(s) (or other resources) to be visited during the research trip.

Applicants should also supply a budget detailing how the requested funds would be spent, and provide details of any other monies secured, and/or applied for, in support of the research trip. Preference may be given to those candidates without alternative sources of funding.

By applying for a HOTCUS Travel Award, all applicants agree that, if successful, they will undertake to present their research findings via a paper at a HOTCUS Annual Conference following their research trip.

The deadline for applications is 31 December 2014. Applications should be submitted to the HOTCUS Committee Secretary, Dr Cara Rodway, via hotcus@gmail.com. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the competition by 23 January 2015.

Previous recipients:

2014 – The award of £750 was split between two postgraduate recipients for research travel towards their PhD projects: James West (Manchester), “Ebony magazine and Johnson Publishing Company throughout the 1970s and 1980s” and Joe Ryan-Hume (Glasgow), “Standing in Reagan’s Shadow: Liberal Strategies in a Conservative Age”.
