CFP: Conference on James Dean (Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick)
December 30, 2014
30 September-October 1, 2015
Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick (UK)
The Humanities Research Centre invites paper proposals for an interdisciplinary conference on actor, image, and global screen icon, James Dean. The two-day conference will be held at the University of Warwick’s Institute of Advanced Study on September 30th and October 1st, 2015, 60 years after Dean’s death.
The organisers are looking for a range of international scholars to discuss James Dean¹s work in theatre, television and cinema; his career at Warner Bros. and influence on the script and casting of Rebel Without a Cause (1955); his impact on audiences in the United States and internationally; his global star image and history from the early 1950s to the present; nostalgia and kitsch; oral history and memory; star documentaries; global marketing, exploitation, and copyright law. The organisers are especially interested in archival research relating to his theatre, film, and television work; the racial, ethnic, class, and gender dimensions of his star image; and topics in authorship, ownership, and entertainment law.
The conference is hosted by the Humanities Research Centre and the Department of History at the University of Warwick. A programme of Dean’s film and television work will be screened at the Warwick Arts Centre as part of the conference.
Potential speakers should submit abstracts of 300 words and a short biography to J.E. Smyth at j.e.smyth@warwick.ac.uk by December 30, 2014.
