To deliver its ambition to be one of the UK’s ‘top 20’ universities, Swansea University seeks an Associate Professor of American Studies with proven excellence in research. This post is located in the Department of Political and Cultural Studies within the College of Arts and Humanities.
This post requires a candidate with extensive academic experience and an established national and/or international reputation or its equivalent in terms of reach, significance and impact in American Studies. The College will consider exceptionally qualified candidates in any area of American Studies, but especially those with experience and expertise in American political culture and history. The College will particularly welcome female and Black, Asian and Minority (BAME) applicants, as they are currently under-represented within this section of the College.
The successful candidate will operate at an international level and publish research in the leading journals of this field and with leading academic publishers. The appointee will be expected to expand their own research activities and be capable of linking with existing research areas and research teams in the College. They will also sustain and develop their own portfolio of funded projects.
The successful candidate will support and extend the continued development of teaching, postgraduate supervision, and research in American Studies at Swansea. There will be opportunities to contribute to teaching and graduate supervision across the College and to be considered for College management responsibilities.
The successful candidate can expect to assume the role of Programme Director for American Studies. It is therefore essential to have an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of American Studies’ methods and approaches to the discipline. The Programme Director chairs the Board of Study for the American Studies programmes and works closely with the Head of the Department of Political and Cultural Studies in ensuring the successful delivery of the programmes.
The College welcomes candidates who can develop links with scholars and students overseas: there may be opportunities to travel and possibly teach for short periods overseas.
Experience of managing intercalary year placements for American Studies students is also desirable.
Applicants should have a PhD relevant to American Studies and should have a record of published outputs and/or a set of planned outputs which can contribute to the projected (2020) University REF return.
Salary – £ 47,801 to £55,389 per annum (pro rata if part time) together with USS pensions benefits.
