Please join the University of Nottingham for its annual American Studies lecture and a special Black History Month event. This year’s distinguished speaker is Annette Gordon-Reed of Harvard University, one of the world’s leading scholars of the American presidency, the first African American winner of the Pulitzer Prize for History, and the first black woman to win the National Book Award in the non-fiction category. She has also received the National Humanities Medal and the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, as well as dozens of other honours. A Professor of Law and History, her books include “Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy,” “Race on Trial: Law and Justice in American History,” “The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family,” “Andrew Johnson” and “The Most Blessed of Patriarchs: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of Imagination.” She will discuss America’s struggles over slavery, race and freedom, including the legacies of that struggle in culture, law and the American imagination.
