Job: Visiting Professor in American Government (Oxford University)

June 28, 2015 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Oxford University invites applications for the John G Winant Visiting Professorship of American Government. The Professor will be expected to contribute to teaching and lecturing in the field of American Government, and will contribute to the intellectual activity of the Rothermere American Institute, South Parks Road, Oxford (http://www.rai.ox.ac.uk/). Teaching will normally take the form of seminars, directed primarily but not necessarily exclusively to graduate students, in the Rothermere American Institute itself. The Visiting Professor will be intellectually eminent in American Government. Candidates will have an academic background (e.g. a PhD and research experience) in American Government, political science, or similar related field of study.

The tenure of the Visiting Professor will be up to one academic year (1 September 2015 to 30 June 2016). He or she normally will be expected to give the equivalent of not fewer than 24 lectures or classes in the year. The Professor will also be expected to deliver one major public lecture, the Winant Lecture, preferably in the first term of his or her appointment.

The Professor will be a Supernumerary Visiting Fellow of Balliol College. A stipend is payable (£25,730 for the year, or pro rata if appointment is for only part of an academic year). This stipend is intended to be a supplement to the postholder’s current salary. In addition, some funds are available for travel expenses and for other expenses incurred in the course of the Professor’s duties.

Further particulars (including details of the application procedure) are available at http://www.ox.ac.uk/about_the_university/jobs/fp/. Applications should be sent to the Secretary to the Winant Visiting Professorship, Social Sciences Division, Hayes House, 75 George Street, Oxford OX1 2BQ, UK (email: vacancies@socsci.ox.ac.uk). The closing date for applications is 28 June 2015.

Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
