NAPS Roundtable: Reading Periodicals: Visual and Verbal Conjunctions
British Association of American Studies, Conference 7-9th April, 2015, Queen’s University Belfast.

Anne E. Carroll has described the relation between written and visual materials in periodicals in terms of ‘dynamic conjunctions’. According to Carroll, meanings are produced through the multimedia format of periodical publication. This roundtable will provide an opportunity to examine these visual and verbal conjunctions as they are played out in periodicals. To what extent, for instance, do new technologies transform the look of periodicals? What is the role of illustration in periodical culture? How do periodicals transform our understanding of the differences between verbal and graphic images? To what extent do periodicals visualise the urban experience? What theories and critical approaches might be appropriated for a better understanding of the relation between image and text?
Should you wish to participate in this roundtable discussion, please email: Victoria.Bazin@northumbria.ac.uk outlining, in no more that 200 words, the ways in which your research engages with some of these questions. (Deadline: 23rd October, 2015)
Colleagues contributing to the roundtable will then be invited to submit a position statement which will be circulated in advance of the discussion.
