Land of the Free?: Immigration and Exile in Today’s America By Professor Glenda Carpio (Harvard University)

Please join the Department of American and Canadian Studies for its distinguished annual lecture, delivered this year by Professor Glenda Carpio of Harvard University, who will talk about multicultural America, new American identities, and the problem of exile in the land of the free. Glenda Carpio is Professor of African and African American Studies and English at Harvard University, and one of the world’s leading experts on black and minority ethnic literature and culture. She has been named one of The Root’s 100 top African American “achievers and influencers” and has received Harvard University’s Abramson Award for Excellence and Sensitivity in Undergraduate Teaching. Among her many publications, her book Laughing Fit to Kill: Black Humor in the Fictions of Slavery was published by Oxford University Press, and she is currently working on a book about immigration, expatriation, and exile.
